    New Mobility Center on MSDN

    Fonte: http://blogs.msdn.com/lokeuei/archive/2008/10/24/new-mobility-center-on-msdn.aspx

It’s time again for a visual refresh for the MSDN Mobility Center. This time round we organized it by development phases instead of “type of content” which was really hard to navigate. With this new look, you can easily find information that you are interested in based on the phase of development you are in.

    image

if you still can’t find what you’re looking for, then do a quick search using the search bar on the top of the site.

Also, we’ve created a Twitter account for the Windows Mobile developer team so that you can connect directly with us. You can sign up by clicking on the link on the top right box called Windows Mobile Buzz.

    Run 96DPI on Your Shadow

    Fonte: http://www.allshadow.com/2008/10/27/run-96dpi-on-your-shadow/

If you run 96DPI on your Shadow, your screen will look to be higher resolution.  The top and bottom bars will take up less space and you’ll see more icons on the screen at once - thus requiring you to scroll less…as shown above. Yes - technically things are smaller, but it’s like turning up the resolution on your computer monitor.

martint started a thread over in the forums that linked to this ZIP file that you need, plus has the following instructions to get 96DPI:

    1) Run the WM6.1-131to96dpi cab file
    2) When it asks for you to restart, do not restart.
    3) Run CeleCMD, and click the “…” button.
    4) Go to Menu, Browse Folder, and select the folder where you put the dpi.ccs file.
    5) Now you will see the dpi file, and then go ahead and run it.
    6) Wait for it go back to the homescreen and then reboot your phone.

Note that depending on what ROM you are running, you may run into some problems. Some people report a flawless installation, and some report that parts of the screen get messed up. That said, since it’s a CAB file, you can just uninstall it from the Settings menu, and everything goes back to normal, so it’s worth a try =D.

    Managed Stored Procedures

    Fonte: http://www.satter.org/2008/03/managed-stored.html

One of the new features in the Mobile Line of Business Accelerator 2008 is something the team called “Managed Stored Procedures”. Now the team did not really write and add to SQL Server CE 3.5 the ability to create stored procedures. Instead we looked at what developers were really looking for that they wanted stored procedures.

The basic notion is that you want to separate out your SQL from the code. It turns out that this technique can be done with relative ease using existing feature in Visual Studio. In fact you can do this with Compact Framework 2.0 or 3.5 and VS2005 or VS2008. The trick is in the resource support for CF applications.

The resource designer supports several types of resources including strings, images, icons, audio, files and other. We played around with the resource designer. First we used “Strings” view. While this gave us the ability to embed the SQL as resource strings the approach was not optimal. While you could access the string by code using “StoredProcs.GetInventory” for example. The actual editing of the string was painful since the SQL is entered in the cell of a grid This meant there was no syntax highlighting or testing support i.e. running the SQL against a test database from within the IDE.

    Msps_image1

Next the team tried just creating files holding the SQL and setting the files as embedded resources. This had the advantage of getting some syntax highlighting along with the ability to test the SQL on some IDE SKUs. Although the testing has to be against SQL Server and not SQL Server CE it still makes creating and debugging the SQL easier. The problem with this approach was how to signal the data layer to retrieve the right SQL file since we no longer could say” StoredProcs. GetInventory”.

    Msps_image2

The last approach was to use the “File” designer of the resource manager. By dragging and dropping the files we had created into the “File” design view, the team got the best of both worlds - the ability to use “StoredProcs.GetCustomers” and when editing the SQL seeing it in a full screen editor with syntax highlighting and ability to test the SQL.

    Msps_image3

So now when using ADO.Net, the new data layer in Mobile LOB Accelerator or your own data layer you can replace the string embedded SQL with the contents of a SQL file.

    cmd.CommandText = StoredProcs.GetInventory;

I hope you find this way of separating out your SQL from the code useful. Let me know what you think. You can also download the new Mobile Line of Business Accelerator 2008 from Microsoft download site.

This time could be minutes, hours, or even some upcoming twilight.
Additionally, this program can announce the delivery notification with a special sound, at your will.

More options: it can disable default notification sounds, and decline "Message sent" notification.

Redfly: A Netbook Entirely Powered By Your Windows Mobile Phone

    Fonte: http://on10.net/blogs/sarahintampa/Redfly-A-Netbook-Entirely-Powered-By-Your-Windows-Mobile-Phone/

    Entry Media

A company called Celiocorp has launched a completely different take on the netbook phenomenon. Instead of offering a lightweight computer running either Linux or XP like today’s netbooks do, this notebook PC is entirely powered by a device you already own: your smartphone. Dubbed a “mobile companion,” the Redfly device has an 8-inch screen, a full-sized keyboard and touch pad, and is connected to your smartphone via a USB cable or Bluetooth.

To use the Redfly notebook, all you need to do is install the Redfly driver on your phone (see supported phones here). You can then use the netbook like any computer. Its bigger screen makes it easier to read documents, write emails, or surf the web. Redfly supports remote desktop, virtualization and other cloud-based environments like Citrix, GoToMyPC, LogMeIn, Microsoft’s Remote Desktop protocol, stoneware, inc., and others. The netbook also features a VGA connector so you can connect your Redfly netbook to a projector for presentations.

As you use the Redfly device, you can be charging your smartphone too, assuming it’s plugged in via the USB cable. The Redfly battery works for up to 8 hours, according to the company.

Because Redfly has no OS, no CPU, no hard drive, and requires no software licenses, its cost is lower than a laptop PC (an Amazon search shows that price to be around $199). That’s also slightly more affordable than today’s crop of OS-powered netbooks, but not by much.

The benefit to using a mobile companion instead of a PC is that the device can get lost or stolen without any threat of losing important data. Of course, a lot of companies have already started doing this now via the use of virtualized business apps running on top of the OS installed on “regular” company laptops – all the important data is in the cloud so laptop loss or theft isn’t as big a concern as before. However, given the price ($199) of Redfly vs. that of a laptop, the replacement cost would be minimal.

    Live Messenger Adds VoIP

    Fonte: http://on10.net/blogs/sarahintampa/Live-Messenger-Adds-VoIP/

    Entry Media

Today, Telefonica, the provider of the largest telecommunications network in Latin America is bringing their VoIP service, Voype, to Windows Live Messenger users in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, the United States, and Venezuela, according to Inside Windows Live Messenger blog. The integration of the service will be done in two phases. In the first phase, you’ll be able to make calls from your PC to any landline or mobile phone in the world. In phase two, you’ll actually be able to both send and receive calls on your PC.

The calls to and from Windows Live Messenger users will be free and calls to landlines and cell phones will be available for a fee. The rates are as follows: about a penny to China, 2¢ to the UK, 5¢ to Canada, or 10¢ to Mexico per minute when calling landlines.

To get started, just sign-up for an account here. Remember - you need a microphone & speakers or headset and broadband connection. You can buy credit in amounts of $5, $10 or $20.

Then to make a call, the process will vary depending on what version of Messenger you have. Here are the steps, courtesy of the WLM blog:

    • If you are using Windows Live Messenger 8.0, 8.1 or 8.5, click on the phone icon either in the main window or choose a contact and click on the phone icon. From the drop down menu, select ‘Call a phone’. Add a phone number, click on enter and start talking.

    • If you are already using the new Windows Live Messenger beta, there are a few of ways you can make a call. You can hover over a contact and if you have a phone associated with that contact, just click on ‘call work’, ‘call mobile’, etc. You can also open up a conversation window with that contact and click on the phone icon and enter their telephone number. For ad hoc calls, you can launch Windows Live Call from the start menu under All Programs > Windows Live Call beta, enter their telephone number and click Call.

This new service will be a direct competitor to Skype, a popular program for making phone calls via the internet.

Opera Mobile 9.5 beta 2 é o primeiro navegador mobile com widgets

    Fonte: http://www.gizmodo.com.br/conteudo/opera-mobile-95-beta-2-e-o-primeiro-navegador-mobile-com-widgets

Saiu o último beta do Opera Mobile 9.5.

Opera Mobile 9.5 adds Opera Widgets to deliver a one-click mobile Internet experience:
Opera Mobile 9.5 beta with Opera Widgets on Windows and UIQ now available for download
Opera Widgets Software Development Kit (SDK) with Opera Widget manager for S60

Oslo, Norway - October 20, 2008 - Opera Mobile 9.5 now introduces Opera Widgets to the mobile Internet experience, enabling one-click Web content access. This release marks the second Opera Mobile 9.5 beta for Windows Mobile and the first-ever beta for UIQ-based phones. A developer version of S60 Widget manager is also available within the Opera Widgets SDK.

T-Mobile has already embraced Opera Mobile with Widgets for their web'n'walk initiative, as previously announced on September 18, 2008. Like T-Mobile, other operators can now incorporate Opera Widgets into their customer offering. This means that customer-selected Web content can be accessed from a list of icons on the home-screen. Widgets can also serve as a means of customer communication, as automatic notifications are now easier to instantly deliver to subscribers.

"Opera has built its second Opera Mobile 9.5 beta based on user-generated feedback following its first public release earlier this year," said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "In addition to Opera Widgets, this new test version promises to be a smoother ride than the previous version, as we have improved page loading times and increased our focus on end-user productivity."

Several Opera Widgets are now pre-installed in the Opera Mobile 9.5 beta builds. Additionally, Opera offers downloadable widgets at widgets.opera.com.

Opera always encourages more user-generated widgets and therefore recently updated its Opera Widget Software Development Kit (SDK). This SDK will enable developers to quickly and easily create widgets using standards-based Web technology. The Opera Widgets SDK now includes two new features:

Opera Dragonfly debugging tool - Develop faster with this tool for debugging JavaScript, inspecting Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and the Document Object Model (DOM). Find your errors and get your widget right.

Widget manager for on-device testing – Widget managers for S60, UIQ and Windows Mobile are included with in the SDK for testing widgets directly on the mobile phone.

Opera is launching the updated SDK with a developer competition called the "X Widget Challenge". Opera is offering $10,000 in cash prizes for the best cross-device widget submissions. Read more about the competition from my.opera.com/widgets.

"Opera has kept developer needs at the heart of this beta release," said Håkon Wium Lie, Chief Technology Officer, Opera Software. "All great developers need great tools to work with. Opera is an industry leader in making the Web a developer-friendly place by constantly innovating within the confines of Web standards.

We will continue to create with developers in mind, as we intend to continue to grow our developer toolkit with each consecutive release."

As an engineer on the Gmail for mobile team, I use the Gmail client on my mobile phone all the time. Because of this, I'm always looking for ways to make it faster, more robust and easier to use. Today, we're thrilled to introduce Gmail for mobile version 2.0 for J2ME-supported and BlackBerry phones. Our focus for this version was to make the experience faster and more reliable. We rearchitected the entire client to push all the processing to the background, greatly improve the client-side caching scheme and optimize every bottleneck piece of code we came across.

So, what does this all mean for you?

    • Overall performance improvement: You should experience significant raw speed improvement, smoother scrolling, and no freezing.
    • Multiple accounts management: If you have both a Gmail and Google Apps email account, you can easily switch between them quickly. You will no longer have to use two different mobile apps to access personal and work emails.
    • Multiple mobile email drafts: You can save multiple email drafts in your mobile phone, so that you can pick and choose what you would like to send later.
    • Powerful shortcut keys: If you have a QWERTY phone, you can use shortcut keys. Hit 'z' to undo, 'k' to go to a newer conversation, and 'j' to go to an older conversation. See Menu/Help in the app for more shortcuts.
    • Basic offline support: Can't get a signal? Not a problem. You can compose and read your most recent emails even when there is no signal. Also, any outgoing messages will be saved in the outbox on your phone and sent automatically when you're back in coverage.
Also, Gmail for mobile 2.0 is available in over 35 languages now. Please note, though, that not all features are available for all phones.
Go to m.google.com/mail in your mobile browser to download the new Gmail for mobile for your phone.

    Hands on: E71

    Fonte: http://www.gizmodo.com.br/conteudo/hands-e71

A bateria do aparelho é um show à parte.

    • Conectividade (802.11b/g, quadriband gsm, umts, hsdpa, bluetooth, WIFI, IR)
    • teclado QWERTY
